What causes itching?
General causes of itching
Causes of itching are numerous including:
- Lack of hygiene
- Allergies / allergic reaction from:
- Diet. E.g. dairy, caffeine, carbonated drinks, acidic or spicy foods
- Scented soaps / lotions / powders
- Pet dander
- Or even no obvious cause . . .
Rectal / Anal itching (Pruritis ani)
More common in men, affecting up to 5% of people. May worsen at night.
Some specific causes include:
- Lack of hygiene after pooping (most common cause)
- Candida / Yeast infections (fungal infections). May originate from the vagina in women.
- Hemorrhoids (internal or external). May affect ability to clean the area after pooping or soil the anal area (internal hemorrhoids can bleed) causing irritation.
- Anal tears. Caused by various activities including anal sex, constipation, excessive diarrhea
- HPV (human papilloma virus) / Genital warts
- Pinworms. Common in children. These tiny white / gray worms are parasites residing in the intestines that crawl out of the anus at night to lay their eggs. Easily got rid of with a mebendazole prescription from your doctor plus thorough cleaning of clothes, bedding and home.
- Tight-fitting or synthetic underwear. Allows anal area to get damp, Cotton absorbs moisture
Jock itch (Tinea cruris)
Jock itch is a fungal infection in the groin. An overgrowth of normally problem-free fungi that live in the area, called dermatophytes. Their proliferation occurs with excessive moisture in the groin:
- Thoroughly dry the groin after showering
- Keep the groin clean and dry
- Wear cotton clothing. Get out of synthetic workout clothes as soon as possible.
